Pakistani Young entrepreneur who invented walking stick for Parkinson's sufferers at risk of deportation

Neha Chaudhry, 24, invented a walking stick to help Parkinson's patients manage the disorder

A young inventor who created a special walking stick for Parkinson's disease patients faces being deported from the UK because of a single error on a 66-page form.

Neha Chaudhry, 24, landed an investment worth £100,000 and planned to bring her award-winning 'smart' stick to the NHS.

The device reverses the temporary paralysis experienced by Parkinson's sufferers by sending an electric pulse to the user's hand.

Experts believe it could revolutionise treatment for the condition, which affects 127,000 people in the UK.

Yet, despite Ms Chaudhry's achievements, the Home Office has refused to renew her visa and ordered her to leave the country within a fortnight.

The rest of the 66-page application form for the Tier 1 visa, which is only granted to highly-skilled entrepreneurs, had been correctly completed, she said.Ms Chaudhry, who is from Pakistan, yesterday claimed the deportation decision was made because she forgot to include a date on one document relating to her company 'Walk To Beat'.

Ms Chaudhry is unable to resubmit the form and has to go through a lengthy appeals process.

As a result, the production of the Parkinson's walking stick has been put on hold.

It had been due to go into production at the end of the year after winning five awards.

Ms Chaudhry, who left her home country to study at the University of the West of England in Bristol, said she was 'shocked and disappointed' by the decision.

She said: 'Out of a 66-page form I mistakenly provided one document that was slightly different from what was required.

'There was no intention to deliberately hide anything - my work is intended to help people.

'In my time in Britain I've never come across anything other than encouragement.

'But because of this one small step, a technicality, I am about to lose all my work for the last three or four years and have to leave. It is just sad.'

Ms Chaudhry developed the stick while she was a design technology student after seeing how her late grandfather in Pakistan was afflicted by his Parkinson's.

The invention sends a discrete vibration through the user's hand that 'unlocks' their paralysis.

It also records data to help doctors understand how the symptom affects patients.

The stick uses sensors to differentiate between when a patient has come to stop because of the disease's symptoms, rather than of their own choice.

Ms Chaudhry said the device looks like a normal walking stick, adding: 'Other products can be very obviously medical and patients don't like the stigma that comes with them.

'This walking stick is designed to look as normal as possible.

'I think my grandfather would have found it useful.'

After graduating, Ms Chaudhry founded a company to develop her invention.

Since then it has attracted investment from the technology company Sysemia.

Andy Sinclair, director of Sysemia, said he was frustrated by the decision: 'Are we seriously saying we don't want a person like Neha in Britain?

'She is making a positive contribution to the country and has invented something that is socially, economically and morally a great thing to do.

'I personally find it very sad and frustrating that someone like Neha, who is committed and passionate about what she is doing, should be asked to leave the country.'

The Home Office said it is reviewing her case.
